How the media talk about domestic violence

Articles that trivialize cases of domestic violence and gender-based violence show that the media in Bulgaria are misunderstood about this serious problem. Many of them turn the news into a sensation, putting loud headlines and drawing conclusions based on assumptions. At the other pole are the media in Norway, where there are almost no articles trivializing the cases of domestic violence and gender-based violence. The authors of articles there avoid sensational headlines, shocking phrases and expressions in order to attract attention, but instead follow the cases in their entirety, seek expert opinions and refrain from authorial categorizations in the coverage of news related to domestic violence and gender-based violence.

Gender-based violence – media coverage

Just over half of all media coverage of domestic or gender-based violence strictly sticks to the facts provided by the responsible institutions (police, prosecutor’s office, court, etc.). These news do not contain emotion or any attitude, no matter what the information tone is – positive or negative. The share of publications that trivialize the topic is unexpectedly high, focusing on the scandalous or shocking side of the cases covered. In these articles, journalists emphasize details that have nothing to do with the essence of the problem.
Only 5% of the articles can be considered as quality journalistic materials, because they look at the situation in its depth and strive to analyze it. The authors of these materials look for the real causes that led to the problem and possible ways to solve it.
Only 10 of the more than 7,000 articles describing cases of domestic or gender-based violence within a year argue that violence is in fact normal or inevitable. Although the share of these materials is extremely small, their very presence in the media environment can be considered as a worrisome signal.

Discussion on first results of DVGBV study

The violence reported in the print and online media takes place within the home. when the conversation touches on the topic of aggression in general, nearly 65% of the mentions concern the domestic environment. Nowadays, traditional media have become an important source of information and influence the raising, coverage and development of important topics. therefore, in order to present a more complete and comprehensive picture of the topic of domestic violence and gender-based violence, it is important to trace and analyze its coverage in the traditional media. As a basis for comparing the way the media cover the topic, Norway is taken as a country that has established and successfully tested practices in relation to the domestic violence and gender-based violence (DVGBV).
